A couple buddies and I recently took a lunch trip down to Truth Barbecue in the Heights area of Houston. Not surprisingly, the experience there is just outstanding. Leonard Botello IV and his whole team really know how to do barbecue and customer service right. The brisket was incredible – perfectly rendered fat, beautiful mahogany bark and smoke ring, and a great smoky flavor. This time around I tried the “Spicy Pepperjack” sausage, and boy am I glad that I did. It was amazing. The flavor was off-the-charts – reminded me of the Taco Sausage from Reveille in Magnolia and the award-winning Chile Relleno sausage from Tejas up in Tomball. My opinion, it is superior to Truth’s Jalapeño Cheddar sausage. And the pork ribs continue to be awesome as well. I cannot help but get the tater tot casserole when I am there – it is that good. And this time around I tried a new side for me – their brussel sprouts. They were so delicious, and the honey sriracha glaze just knocked my socks off. Not to be forgotten – the house-made pickles and pickled onions are always a great counterpoint to the sumptuous smoked meats. And Mama Botello’s cakes are simply incredible. This place has a great vibe and outstanding food. Ya gotta give them a try if you haven’t been there yet.
