I cannot say enough good things about Valentina’s Tex Mex BBQ in the south end of Austin. It is a truly great fusion of mesquite-smoked barbecue and Tex Mex! What better combination could exist than bringing together two of my favorite foods on the planet. Miguel Vidal and his familia are doing things so right — everything is house-made, including their phenomenal flour tortillas, and true to the traditions of both barbecue and Tex Mex.
That breakfast taco is called “The Real Deal Holyfield” – and it is the real deal. Amazing brisket, fried egg, potatoes, refried beans, bacon and house-made tomato serrano salsa. Beyond delicious. And the brisket is off the hook amazing – perfect smoked flavor, perfect tenderness and moisture. Great bark. Just all holy cow good!!
Miguel was so kind and accommodating. He was very busy as usual, but took 20+ minutes to talk with me, sharing details on how he designed their current pits, his plans for two more pits based on lessons learned, his philosophy on what they’re doing at Valentina’s, the importance of family, and their plans for a full-blown restaurant, hopefully sooner rather than later.
You won’t meet more friendly folks, and the food they are creating and delivering is absolutely amazing. Totally worth the drive to the south side of Austin. Don’t hesitate — just go. You won’t be sorry.
